The Grizzlies U16s squad placed host to St Helens Saints II in the NBL on Saturday 23rd November. The Saints had made a good start to the season, so the game was going to be another stern test for the Grizzlies in their debut season at National League level.
The game began at a great pace, with the Grizzlies starting the game with a bang, matching their experienced opponents all the way, played a great passing game to cut through the Saint defence. St Helens were playing good basketball themselves though too, and the first quarter finished with a score of 15-23 to the Saints.
The 2nd quarter saw the Grizzlies continue to find baskets through some slick passing moves and strong drives, but the Saints hit some baskets from range and broke well to extend their lead to 24-48 at half time.
The 3rd quarter was a similar story, with both teams trading baskets including some sublime individual efforts from the Grizzlies players Rohan Bradley and Cruz Gomes, but the Saints showed their experience to keep their noses ahead, and the 3rd quarter ended 35-69.
Chasing the game, the 4th quarter saw the game open up with both teams on 4 team fouls, and despite some more bright moments the Saints were able to maintain their lead to close out the game 44-84.
Assistant Coach Dave Leah was proud of the performance despite the result;
“Against a team of the calibre of St Helens, I was really pleased how well the team played today. Our passing was high quality all game. and we showed even with a few injuries to cope with that our squad quality is deep and how far we have come. We go into the next game high on confidence.”
MVP: Cruz Gomes

MVP was Cruz Gomes, who played a great game at point guard, taking his baskets well.
