The Congleton U16s hosted Liverpool on Saturday 8th February. Liverpool came into the game with one of the league’s best records – and despite an excellent performance from the Grizzlies, it was Liverpool who prevailed to take the win.
In an exciting game that saw the lead change hands throughout, the Grizzlies squad were on great form both in attack and defence to run Liverpool all the way.
Liverpool edged the opening exchanges and finished Q1 with an 8pt lead - but the Grizzlies were well in the game after being able to find space in the key and finishing well.
Q2 was a high scoring quarter, with both teams trading blows and the Grizzlies breaking the press well, also finding the target with shots from range. At half time Liverpool's lead had increased to 12pts, but the Grizzlies were in no mood to lie down.
Q3 proved to be a superb quarter for the Grizzlies, who stormed back into the game with a dominant period, scoring a flurry of baskets to grab another 14pts, whilst restricting Liverpool to only 6pts - closing things to being a 4pt game going into the final quarter.
With the momentum with the Grizzlies, Liverpool switched up their approach and pressed effectively to force turnovers, whilst also finding their own shooting form, to sink three 3-pointers that helped them take the game away in the closing stages, in the end taking a 52-69 win.
Coach Ryan Anderson was pleased with the performance; “We were comfortably beaten in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, but today the players showed just how far they’ve come on with their development over the past few months. We gave Liverpool who are a very strong side a real test today. We matched them physically, adapted well to situations and took our chances well – the players can be very proud of their performance.”
