About Congleton Grizzlies Basketball Club

A community basketball club, ran by the community, FOR THE COMMUNITY!
This is where our journey begins. A long standing club in the heart of Congleton, Cheshire.
OUR STORY!
Setup in the late 1960's, the club was originally formed by a small group of working men who wanted to detract from their working lives and stay fit whilst playing a new, exciting sport. A familiar name still with us in William 'Bill' Baxter was involved from the outset, coming to Congleton from Holmes Chapel at the request of a close friend to help run the club whilst he was on holiday. That friend never returned to run the club, and Bill kept it going due to his love for the sport.
With Bill at the helm, the club went on to compete in regional and national competition, winning divisional titles and making a name for itself in the North of England. The club looked like it would go strength to strength, but the countries economics in the 1980's led to many giving up the sport due to financial reasons, and the club sat in a state of mediocrity throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Brief spells back in competition were attempted, but they never lasted as member numbers dwindled.
After a long period of stagnation, the club had a rebrand and experienced a mini-boom in participation rates due to the need for social sporting activity after the Covid-19 global pandemic. This rebrand was led by Ryan Anderson, with the help of Jack Purdham, Harry Holland and Bill Baxter. With the club now fully integrated with the digital age, the junior aspect of the club took off, rising to 150 members in two years, and the seniors aspect made a resurgence into local competition. Both Juniors and Seniors competitive teams won their respective leagues at the first time of asking, with the Grizzlies being a founding member of the North West Regional League at the junior level, prompting Basketball England North West region to name the league award after Bill Baxter for his services to basketball.
To date, the club has won 9 divisional titles at senior level, and 2 league titles at the junior level. The Grizzlies also entered the Junior National Leagues for the first time in 2024/25, and had a club restructure to allow it to operate as a modern entity within its own right, paving the way for a bright successful future.
