Officials Information
Congleton Grizzlies Basketball Club takes the officiating side of basketball very seriously. We aim to provide competition for all ages and abilities whilst developing skills on and off the court, but we also realise that none of this is possible without the support and dedication from officials, whether that be a referee, a table official, coaching staff or volunteers.
We recognise these amazing people and the part they play for our club, and we as a club want them to be involved in the clubs progress moving forward.
What do officials do?
Referees
A referees job is to officiate the game in accordance to the official rules of basketball as put forth from FIBA. Accompanying the rules is an interpretations document to aid in the decision making for a referee. Referees are all at different stages of qualifications, with level 1, 2 and 3 on offer from BE, as well as further courses for professional referees.
Table Officials
Table officials are the people responsible for recording the statistics of the game. Starting with the official scorebook, which records scores, fouls and timeouts, table officials are also responsible for communication between coaches and referees, controlling substitutions and time-out calls during the game. The entire table official team consists of a score keeper, time keeper, shot clock operator and statisticians.
Time Keepers
Responsible for managing the visible scoreboard. Controls the buzzer to alert referees to substitutions and time-outs.
Score Keepers
Main duty involves the official scoresheet. In charge of keeping an official record of scores during the game as well as fouls, time-outs used and match information such as teams involved and who the officials are.
Shot Clock Operator
In charge of the shot clocks, their job is to maintain a visible timer that is specific to the shot clock rule. Utilising a hand held controller, they can reset the clock to 24 seconds or 14 seconds at the push of a button.
Statisticians
Given the task of record keeping statistics throughout the game. Using a computer system, they record all kinds of statistical data including number of shots taken, where they were taken and if they were successful or not. Also records other statistics such as rebounds, assists, steals, block and turnovers.
