The U16s Grizzlies made another trip to Liverpool on Saturday 2nd November, this time to take on one of the strongest teams in the division – Liverpool Basketball Club – who finished as division runners-up last season.
The game started at a blistering pace with Liverpool playing an aggressive pressing game that was rewarded with them racing into an early 22-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Despite some bright moments from the Grizzlies, clean cut chances were hard to come by coming up against a resolute Liverpool defence. The Grizzlies made some changes off the bench for the second period, but continued to concede possession too easily and found themselves 35-15 behind at half time.
Two unfortunate injuries early in the second half saw the Grizzlies player options reduced and Liverpool continued their scoring, but after regrouping the Grizzlies showed their battling qualities to take a grip on the game and score three baskets in quick succession to close the gap, with Q3 ending 57-21 down. However, Liverpool were able to raise their own game again and pushed on to secure a 70-34 victory.
Coach Dave Leah was pleased with the team despite defeat; “Liverpool showed they are one of the best teams in the league, but I was pleased we showed our fighting character today despite the injuries we faced, with the whole squad stepping up.”
MVP: Sam Akker
Grizzlies MVP was awarded to Sam Akker for a typically all-action display - steals, baskets, rebounds and always wanting the ball.
