After defeating Sheffield Elite II in round one, the Grizzlies took another step up facing Premier Division Sheffield Elite I in round 2 of the NBL Cup.
The game started with a real bang, with the Grizzlies hitting baskets and making Sheffield Elite know they were in for a real battle. Both teams traded blows with the pace showing no sign of letting up. As the game progressed though it was Sheffield that were able to push ahead with their Premier Division quality coming through, after a string of 3 pointers hit their mark to help close out a 35-94 win.
In what was always going to be a tough game, the Grizzlies can take plenty of credit from the game after a performance full of energy and quality from the first tip to the final buzzer against very strong opposition.
Coach Ryan Anderson was pleased despite the defeat; “Sheffield Elite are a Premier division NBL team that we knew had a whole squad of very physical & athletic players for this age group, so it was always going to be a tough afternoon. But we gave them a real game first half and showed our quality and fight on plenty occasions. The scoreline doesn’t really do us justice - there was a lot to be really encouraged about and the experience the players take away going up against this level of opposition will do us the world of good.”
MVP: Olly Cornes
MVP went to Olly Cornes, who scored over half of the Grizzlies points and was as lethal as always from distance.
