Grizzlies hold off Cheshire Wire to secure first NBL victory, 59-55
The Grizzlies welcomed a familiar club to Congleton on Saturday, playing Cheshire Wire in the teams first home league game of the season.
The first quarter was not great for the Grizzlies, with early fouls for each player disrupting the rhythm and allowing the Wire players to build up steam in the game. The grizzlies managed to edge the quarter in a low scoring affair, ending the quarter up 14 to 11.
The second quarter was much the same, but the Wire started converting longer range shots to open up the Grizzlies defence. The Wire took this quarter 18 to 15, to tie the game at half time.
The second half saw the Grizzlies change their tact on offence, with a rotation of players all finding their feet and starting to come to life, but the Wire managed to convert on turnovers to stay in the fixture, with some great individual defence causing the Grizzlies issues. Wire took the quarter by one, meaning they had the lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Grizzlies came to life on defence. Causing turnovers, stifling shots and dominating the rebound battle, and this translated to offence. The Grizzlies managed to get out in transition right into the heart of the Wire defence and the visitors had no reply. The Grizzlies dominated the fourth winning it by 7 points and limiting the wire to just 5 points total, taking the game with a final score of 59 - 53 to the Grizzlies.
The national league season continues next week away vs Mersey Mavericks on Saturday, before the team welcomes Sheffields first team in round 2 of the NBL Cup.
