In the first of two games in one day for the U16/17s squad, a squad of six Grizzlies players took on the highly experienced Hanley Hustlers White in the WeGotNext League.
Right from the tip the Grizzlies almost took the lead, denied by a block at the rim, but from there Hanley's starting five experienced players made it a tough opening quarter for the Grizzlies, running a full court press and being clinical on the counter to race into an 18-0 lead. Quarter 2 was much improved, with the Grizzlies grabbing their first two baskets through Reuben Murphy and some individual brilliance from debutant Cruz Gomes, but Hanley kept going to add 7 more points themselves to take a lead of 26-4 into half time.
Quarter 3 against Hanley's most physical set of players saw the Grizzlies grab further good baskets through Gomes & Alex Kyrmalis with the team also finding their passes better, but fatigue was telling and fouls meant the two Grizzlies were close to being disqualified, and Hanley finished the quarter 45-8 up. Quarter 4 saw the Grizzlies finish strongly, sinking some baskets through a fine 3-pointer from Ben Wells and 2's from Murphy & Gomes to close out the game with a final score of 15 versus the Hustlers' 53.
