On Sunday 3rd November, the Grizzlies U17s squad took on Reddock Rockets in the WGNL, looking to secure their first win in the Stoke-based competition.
The opening minutes were cagey but after three clinical baskets from Reuben Murphy gave the Grizzlies a foothold in the game the pace quickly ramped up. Both teams traded blows as the game ebbed and flowed each way as the game reached half time neck-and neck.
The second half began at a quick pace and continued that way throughout – and just as the Rockets looked to be pulling ahead the Grizzlies stormed back, playing at a high-tempo and being accurate in front of the basket with Cruz Gomes, Sam Akker and Murphy again all hitting the mark. Fouls were starting to creep into the Rockets game though, and with the game entering the final few seconds tied at 36-36, a foul by the Rockets presented Grizzlies point-guard Alex Kyrmalis with the chance to win the game with the last throw of the ball. Under pressure, he cooly despatched the basket to win the game for the Grizzlies, final score 38-36.
Coach Ryan Anderson was delighted with the performance; “We scored our baskets when it really mattered today and always believed we could get the win despite at times being behind. We were calm and made good decisions and the way we won it will do the whole team’s confidence the world of good.”
MVP: Alex Kyrmalis
It couldn't be anyone else really could it? MVP was awarded to Alex Kyrmalis for a strong performance throughout - and nerves of steel to win the game.
