GRIZZLIES vs STAFFORD SPARTANS

The Grizzlies took on Stafford Spartans in the WeGotNext league on Sunday 25th January, looking to grab victory after putting in batting displays in the previous two games in the competition.

The Spartans came into the game top of the table, having chalked up 5 wins already including a bruising 62-16 win over the Grizzlies back in October.

The Grizzlies began very confidently and finished Q1 with a 13-10 lead, with Cruz Gomes' three-point basket separating the sides.  However, Stafford narrowed the gap to just 1pt by half time after they pulled off an effective pressing game, the score now at 19-18.

In the second half, the Grizzlies were able to go into another gear, putting all their training into practice to pull off some great team moves.  The team scored a further 16pts, including three baskets from Sam Akker and a buzzer-beating long-ranger from Ben Wells to end Q3 with a commanding lead of 35-23.

As the Spartans threatened to stage a late comeback, the Grizzlies defence stayed resolute and this time were able to break the press well, grabbing another couple of baskets to see out the game 39-33.

It was one of the best performances of the season against a very strong side, and further evidence of how the team has improved game-by-game in the WGNL this season.

Coach Ryan Anderson was pleased with the team’s improvement over the season; “Stafford are a tough side to play, but whereas earlier in the season we struggled with their physicality, this time we matched them and kept the intensity up all throughout the game. We passed the ball well and were clinical in our finishing.  The players have developed a lot since October and it was a well-deserved win for the players against a top side.”

MVP: Cruz Gomes & Rico Weekes

MVP was shared by Rico Weekes and Cruz Gomes, as voted by their teammates.
