** MATCH REPORT **
Our under 14 Grizzlies headed to Warrington to face Cheshire Wire at the Birchwood Leisure Complex. With a streak of 7 wins on the bounce, and a tough fixture ahead, the youngsters knew today could be a turning point for the season having only won against the Wire by 3 back on November.
The first quarter started in favour of the Wire. A lack of defensive structure, rebounding and with the lads struggling to put the ball in the hoop led to an early time out. This helped stabilise the quarter but it was the second unit who took charge of the game, using defence as a catalyst to get out on the break. The defence was so good inface that Wire failed to score in the last 5 minutes of the first. Grizzlies lead 21-10.
The second quarter was a different story. All of the lads stepped up and played well defensively, and they were running the transition very well. The biggest issue we had however was the lack of ability to put the ball in the hoop, with one possession requiring 6 offensive rebounds and 7 attempts at the hoop to no avail! This didn't matter however as the Grizzlies extended their lead, winning the quarter 30-18. Half time score 51 - 28 in favour of the Grizzlies.
The second half was one for the little guys, with Kobie Burton playing almost perfect defence on the Wire point guard, Alby Watson getting steals, Rohan Bradley and Judah Hunter dominating the boards and Ryan Simethy controlling the game from the point gaurd spot. With extended minutes for the role players, they held their own, even extending the lead ten fold and really cementing their case to be starters.
The fourth quarter was used to test a few things, allowing certain players to try out new roles and new ideas before rotating out, which led to Wire coming back into the game. It was too little too late for them however, with the Grizzlies running out 94-59 winners.
Still much to work on, but the undefeated season draws closer. Can they do it?!
