** GRIZZLIES WIN!! **
Our first Juniors game EVER ended with the Grizzlies on top!!
Our u14s hosted the Mersey Mavericks for the clubs first ever juniors game in our history. Mersey turned up with a full squad and a fantastic looking kit I must say, with the Grizzlies also in their new strip courtesy of @congletoneats.
The first quarter started with a very good defensive effort from the grizzlies, with Mersey finding it difficult to penetrate to the basket. However, this defensive effort did not produce great results offensively, with both teams failing to put many points on the board. First quarter ends with Grizzlies up by 2.
Second quarter comes along, and so did Mersey. Quick fire layups from their guards forced the Grizzlies into a timeout to regroup. Some solid words and a can do mindset saw the Grizzlies reinstate their high intensity defence and this eventually lead to some great offensive plays from the youngsters. Both teams tied the quarter, so Grizzlies up by 2 at the half.
A short half-time meant the starting units re-entered the game to carry on the momentum, but some sloppy turnovers and great offence from Mersey saw the Grizzlies give up easy layups, forcing another time out. The intensity we lost was regained with the second unit and the Grizzlies wrangled back the momentum of the game to go into the fourth quarter up by 3.
The fourth quarter was shaping up to be crunch time, with the Grizzlies getting carried away and letting Mersey stay in the game. Two time-outs were needed in this quarter to help the young guns keep their heads. Some cool words from coach, and a motivating line helped reignite the defensive fire, and the Grizzlies didn't look back, with the last 3 minutes of the game being all Grizzly. Solid defence caused multiple turnovers, and we capitalised, with the final score being 39-34 to the young Grizzlies.
A tight and tough game throughout, these youngsters showed exactly what it means to be a Grizzly, and we go again next week when we welcome Cheshire Wire to town.
As it stands, we are undefeated!!
